Blessings in Disguise

Sometimes blessings come in disguise and from the most unlikely places.  This time last year we were in the process of moving courtesy of the Army Reserves.  However, we were moving to an area with few homes to rent (especially that would fit a family of 7).

We were blessed to find a home that another homeschooling family was ready to rent out.  It was not the home I pictured us living in.  Instead of being a traditional single family home, it was set up as a double (as Pennsylvanians like to call them).  So this means we have two kitchens, two laundry areas, and most importantly - two heaters and two hot water heaters.

This is especially important on days like yesterday.  It was an average Sunday.  We went to church, came home, and fixed lunch.  Afterwards, we discovered we had no hot water.  This is the second time in a few months this has happened.  But we are blessed to have a second hot water heater for the other half of the house.  This means life can continue to function fairly normal until it is fixed.

It appears a part needs to be replaced, so hopefully, it will fixed tomorrow.  We have had a lot of adventures with water/pipes over the past almost 21 years.  But this is the first time, we have not had life completely interrupted by the occurrence.  So for us the blessing has come in the form of renting a double rather than a single family home.

  1. Awesome! I'm glad you guys had the second one! I know what it is like to have your hot water go out...it can really mess up a day!

    1. Thanks for commenting. Being without water or without hot water is definitely no fun, especially when we need to get laundry done so our children can have clean clothes to pack for camp.

  2. I'm also military with a household of 6 and the worst thing about a PCS move is always finding a new home to live in. On base housing isn't always available and the wait list can sometimes be stupidly long. Glad you were able to find something and as you said blessings aren't always obvious. Have a great week!

  3. In our case, we are full time in the reserves so this pcs and our last pcs, military housing was not available (no military installation near the reserve center). So we had to find our own housing. Hope you have a great week also.

  4. Huh, I've never heard of a double house. I'd really like to see the inside of one and the floor layout sometime. It sounds like your unexpected house turned out to be a gift from God!

    1. A double is like a duplex if you are familiar with that. Only in our case, the house evidently had a front porch that was enclosed, allowing common indoor access to both sides of the home. It helps make the home function well for our family.

  7. Well good thing for the double! I've never lived in a house like that, but we sure could have used it when our heat went out in January!

    1. Yes it is a blessing and what is too funny about your comment is our heater broke during the winter. So we were several days without heat because a part had to be replaced. It definitely does not make life fun.
